Does My Nodule or Lump Need a Biopsy?
Thyroid nodules are common, most are benign, and not every nodule needs a biopsy. The ACR TI-RADS criteria, shown in the image below, are usually used to determine whether a nodule is recommended for biopsy.

Length of the procedure
The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes. The procedure includes a physical examination, ultrasound evaluation, biopsy, microscopic evaluation, and patient wrap-up.
Physical Exam
A physical exam will be performed to identify the area of concern the lesion.
Ultrasound evaluation
An ultrasound will be performed to thoroughly evaluate the lesion, mass or swelling underneath the skin.
Biopsy Procedure

After the Procedure
– Patient will rest and be under observation for 15 minutes
– The physician will begin evaluating the cells under a microscope
Results
Preliminary results will be determined before the patient leaves the same day and a final diagnosis will be reported either the same day or within 24-48 hours (longer if specialized testing is required)
Additional Tests
Additional tests may be required including immunohistochemistry and molecular studies
