Length of the procedure

The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes. The procedure includes a physical examination, ultrasound evaluation, biopsy, microscopic evaluation, and patient wrap-up.

A physical exam will be performed to identify the area of concern the lesion.

An ultrasound will be performed to thoroughly evaluate the lesion, mass or swelling underneath the skin.

Biopsy Procedure

Utilizing an ultrasound, local anesthesia is given for a painless procedure. A thin needle is inserted into the lesion to extract cells of interest.

After the Procedure

– Patient will rest and be under observation for 15 minutes
– The physician will begin evaluating the cells under a microscope

Results

Preliminary results will be determined before the patient leaves the same day and a final diagnosis will be reported either the same day or within 24-48 hours (longer if specialized testing is required)

Additional tests may be required including immunohistochemistry, molecular studies and flow cytometry
